 It is used to store needles and marking pins with their heads protruding.
There are many types of pincushions, but using wool for the surface cloth and wool thread for stuffing can help keeping needles in good condition without rusting.
There are various kinds of pincushions as shown in the photographs. The pad about 7cm wide and 2cm thick is the easiest to use when considering the long hand needles as a guide for the size.
