 Thimbles made of tanned skin are mostly used for hand sewing for more stabilization of the needle and for less damage on the sewing thread.
Thimble protects the finger especially because you stitch with the needle end pressed onto the thimble.
Please refer to the photograph below on how to hold the needle when using the thimble.
